Sumitomo nails slice of life and comedy scenes, but Yamamoto is perfect for battle and suspense. For me, what makes Kai Kai is Kenji Yamamoto’s score, so I’ll be using his music in tandem with Sumitomo. The usage of different OP and ED’s aren’t the only musical change. I love anime formatting, the OP’s and ED’s, narrators, 22 minute episodes, so I wanted to do that with my project, episodes will average 22-30 minutes in most cases with a few exceptions. I’ve kept many elements from the Manga Cut, such as the usage of Dragon Box footage, manga pacing and a reworked Sumitomo score, using some pieces from his other Dragon Ball work and fixing the song placement. My project serves as a middle ground between this 11 hour and the official 69 episodes. If you want the most abridged and shortest way to experience the Buu Arc anime. How am I cutting so much content? Well this pacing is heavily inspired by another Final Chapters fan project known as the Manga Cut, this is an amazing project that cuts the entire Buu Arc down to 11 one-hour episodes, nothing but the episode content and paced according to the original manga. Let’s start with the content, Z‘s Buu Arc was 91 episodes, Final Chapters was 69, with my cut I am aiming for 26-28 episodes, the length of a standard two cour anime. It seems like a junk release but that English dub is so good and we need a good finish off to the Kai Brand.
Many pointless filler was kept in and the score, composed by Norimoto Sumitomo is frankly a mess, not to mention Japan and the rest of the world got two completely different versions of the show with different episode counts as well as OP/ED’s. The footage was cropped into a 16:9 aspect ratio and a horrible green tint was applied to everything. It would be 3 years later that Kai returned with Dragon Ball Kai The Final Chapters.

The series was ended after only the Androids Arc and replaced by Toriko, leaving the Buu Arc not apart of Kai, the final episode was not even broadcast due to a Natural Disaster. At least it started that way, unfortunetly Kai met it’s fair share of problems, Keji Yamamoto, the composer for Kai‘s OST was found to have plagiarised some of his tracks off popular Hollywood films and was replaced with 3 episodes to go (44 eps for the English release). Dragon Ball Kai is an amazing product, an updated HD re-release of Dragon Ball that fixes the two biggest problems of the show, filler and a very outdated and lazy English dub.
